Atlético-MG slams refereeing and calls for drastic changes: "Unacceptable"

Atlético-MG used social media to criticize Brazilian refereeing after a 0-0 draw with Internacional in Porto Alegre. The club is furious with referee Alex Gomes Stefano's performance and is demanding drastic changes from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

The referee, who was the protagonist in the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship, played at Beira-Rio, sent off defender Vitor Hugo in the 15th minute of the first half after consulting VAR, overturned a penalty on Rony, also after being called upon by the tool, and overturned a red card given to Alan Patrick of Inter, also after reviewing the play.

The efforts of the new Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the contribution it has made to the evolution of Brazilian football are clear. But it is urgent that the terrible refereeing undergoes a drastic change. What happened today is unacceptable.

Vitor Hugo expelled

At the 15-minute mark, defender Vitor Hugo fouled Borré. Upon being called to the VAR booth, the referee determined that the Atlético Mineiro player had left his foot on the opponent's knee and, in addition to noting the foul, issued a red card to the number 14.

Penalty disallowed

In the 31st minute, Rony fell in the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty against the number 33. Once again called upon by VAR, he reviewed the play and reversed his decision.

Sampaoli expelled

At the 34-minute mark, it was the Atlético coach's turn to be sent off. Allegedly for excessive complaining, the Argentinian also received a red card. He was quite indignant.

In the 11th minute of the second half, the referee sent off Alan Patrick for a foul on Junior Alonso. However, after consulting VAR, the referee overturned the yellow card for the midfielder from the Rio Grande do Sul team, issuing only a yellow card instead.
